One-to-one lessons
The only really effective way of learning the Alexander Technique is through individual lessons. An introductory lesson (1 hour) normally costs £35; subsequent lessons (minimum 45 minutes) cost £30, but concessionary fees are also available.
Learning the Alexander Technique is rather like learning to drive or to play a musical instrument: we recommend a series of regular lessons - the number needed and the frequency varies according to the individual. As with driving or music lessons, the Technique aims to give you skills that you can then apply to your daily activities thoughout your life, though you may want to come back for an occasional 'top-up' lesson.
Daytime and evening appointments are available (Saturday morning appointments also available in Felixstowe). Please wear loose, comfortable clothing; women should wear trousers. You will need to remove your shoes.
Introductory sessions
If you are not sure about committing yourself to regular lessons, come with your partner, a friend, relative or colleague and explore the principles of the Technique through a two-part introductory session (each part lasts around two hours). Each session involves games, illustrated talk and discussion; you will also get a good deal of hands-on work from me to give you an idea of 'the Alexander experience'.
These introductory sessions typically cover:
- the power of habit
- the head-neck-back relationship
- using conscious directed thinking to achieve a more balanced, co-ordinated self
- what triggers tension and learning how to respond differently
- faulty sensory appreciation (do we know what we are doing with our bodies?)
- lying-down work
- standing, sitting and walking.
Introductory sessions are available in Ipswich, Felixstowe and Beccles and cost £50 per person (£40 concessions) for the two-part session.
Please be aware that these sessions are designed to help you discover whether you would like to have Alexander Technique lessons; they are not a substitute for one-to-one tuition.
