One-to-one lessons
The only really effective way of learning the Alexander Technique is through individual lessons. An introductory lesson (1 hour) normally costs £35; subsequent lessons (minimum 45 minutes) cost £32, but concessionary fees are also available.
Learning the Alexander Technique is rather like learning to drive or to play a musical instrument: we recommend a series of regular lessons - the number needed and the frequency varies according to the individual. As with driving or music lessons, the Technique aims to give you skills that you can then apply to your daily activities thoughout your life, though you may want to come back for an occasional 'top-up' lesson.
Daytime and evening appointments are available. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing; women should wear trousers. You will need to remove your shoes.
If you need to cancel a lesson , please give at least 24 hours' notice or the full lesson fee will be charged.
Introductory courses
5-week introductory course in the Alexander Technique
The aim of this course is to introduce you to the principles of AT, so that you can decide if you wish to take it further. It is not a substitute for one-to-one lessons. It is suitable for people of all ages and levels of fitness.
We learn through illustrated talk and discussion, games and some hands-on work from the teacher. Every session concludes with 20 minutes of 'lying down' work, so that participants leave feeling refreshed, calm and relaxed.
The main topics covered by the course are as follows, though the content may vary slightly depending on participants' particular interests.
- F M Alexander and his discoveries
- How does the Alexander Technique work?
- The relationship between quality of movement/activity and general health
- The head-neck-back relationship
- Overdoing, endgaining and how to stop
- Sitting, standing and walking
- Lying down work (semi-supine)
- Obstacles to progress (habit and faulty body awareness)
- Reading, writing and using a computer
- Applying AT to other daily activities
The course is designed for a minimum of 4 participants and a maximum of 6 and costs £50 per person for the whole course (payable in advance). At present, these courses are held in Ipswich only. Please call 01394 277684 for next starting dates and times.
Introductory sessions.
If you would like a bit more hands-on work than is possible in the 5-week course, I also offer two-part introductory sessions (each part lasts around 2 hours) for two people. Come with a partner, friend, relative or colleague. The cost is £50 per person for the two-part session.
