How does the Technique work?

The Technique is not a therapy or a treatment. In lessons, you learn to become more aware of your habitual patterns of tension and how to stop responding to stimulus in the usual, harmful way. You work with the teacher to help yourself, actively co-operating in the learning process.

The Technique works on the basis that the mind and body are a unity. The teacher's hands work gently: to encourage the release of over-tight muscles and the strengthening of those that have been under-used; and to restore the correct relationship between the head, neck and back. The pupil reinforces this process by a sequence of directed thought.

The work in lessons concentrates on simple, everyday activities such as standing and sitting, walking, bending to pick up an object, lying down. We may also look at activities specific to your job or lifestyle. As time goes on, you can apply the principles of the Technique to any activity - driving, dancing, housework, typing, playing an instrument, sport.
